Admission Day

I got to sleep in late today because it's a state holiday. Today is Admission Day or Statehood Day. It celebrates Hawaii becoming the 50th state of the United States of America.

I looked around for a news story today about Statehood Day but I guess with everything going on now they didn't do one.

I did find a story that Hawaii News Now did last year. Even last year, the story said that there aren't a lot of events that celebrate it. The story showed video of how big of a celebration is was on August 21, 1959 when President Eisenhower officially made Hawaii a state.

It took a lot of work for Hawaii to become a state. It says one of the earliest bills sent to the U.S. Congress to try and make Hawaii a state was in 1919 by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole.

According to a video I watched by Newsy, the different political parties in Congress were worried about letting Hawaii become a state so it took a while for Hawaii to win support.

The video also talked about how some people still protest statehood today. These people believe in sovereignty and that it was wrong for the American government to have taken Hawaii from the Hawaiian monarchy.
