I decided to read Time for Kids today and found an interesting article titled Honoring an Artist. The artist's name was Ruth Asawa.

I had never heard of her. The article said she made abstract sculptures and often used wires. The reason why she's in the news now is because the United States Postal System released a set of 20 stamps on August 13 showing her work.

The article said that she was born in California in 1926 to Japanese immigrants and loved art. Because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, her family was sent to an internment camp. In the internment camp, she met Japanese American animators who had worked for Walt Disney Studios and they helped her with her drawing skills.

After she was released from the internment camp, she went to college and also traveled to Mexico where she learned basketmaking. She used what she learned to make sculptures by looping wires together.

She also supported arts education and told politicians that they should give money to arts programs.

I found another article that showed what the stamps honoring her look like.

I was also curious about the Japanese American animators the article mentioned so I did a quick search. I found this article titled Discover The Pioneering Japanese-American Animation Artists of the Golden Age. There were a lot of Japanese American animators who were sent to internment camps. One of the most famous is Iwao Takamoto. He worked for Walt Disney Studios after the war. He later worked for Hanna Barbera Studios and is probably most famous for designing Scooby-Doo.
