Chuseok - Korean Thanksgiving

I saw that today is Chuseok. I didn't know what that was so I looked it up. Found a couple of short videos that gave an explanation.

So it's a 3-day harvest festival in Korea. Kinda like the American Thanksgiving. It's celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th moon of the lunar calendar. Because it's based on the lunar calendar, the date changes every year on the western calendar.

It's celebrated to give thanks to their ancestors for a good harvest. Families get together for a big feast and give offerings to their ancestors. It's a big deal in South Korea. People have to fight traffic because everyone's trying to get home to celebrate. People spend lots of time in the kitchen preparing a lot of food for the gathering.

One of the videos said that North Korean also celebrates Chuseok but they mostly go to the graves to pay respect to their ancestors.

I found this article that says that because of the coronavirus this year people were holding virtual services instead of visiting grave sites. The article said a lot less people were traveling this year but one resort area called Jeju still seems to be really busy.
