Today is Flag Day so I found an article of fun facts about the American flag.

The American flag is 243 years old.
The first flag had 13 red and white stripes with 13 stars for each of the original 13 states.
The article I read said that even though a lot of people believe Betsy Ross created the American flag there is no evidence that she did.
A 17-year old boy scout designed our current flag that includes Alaska and Hawaii. It was a homework assignment and his teacher didn't think it was very good. He got a B minus for it. But the teacher said he would change his grade if his design got chosen. So the boy wrote to his congressman and the design became our nation's flag on July 4, 1960. His teacher changed his grade to an A.
This is a picture from the Manoa School website of JPOs raising the flag at our school.

I was a JPO this past year and I got to put the flag up twice. I didn't really learn much about the flag from JPO. My mom said it was different when she was a JPO. She said all the JPOs would watch the flag being raised in the morning and salute. She taught me that the flag should never touch the ground and how to fold it. She said JPOs also had to remember to bring in the flag when it was raining.
