Happy Father's Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

For Father's Day, we let my dad relax. That's all he actually wanted. My mom bought dinner and we ate out on the lanai again. Since I forgot to make a card, I drew a Happy Father's Day message in chalk on the ground in the lanai.

I looked up the history of Father's Day and found a cool slideshow on Good Housekeeping's website. It said that a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd held the first Father's Day celebration at a YMCA in Spokane, Washington in 1910. She wanted to honor her father who was a Civil War veteran and single dad to six children.

The slideshow also said that President Johnson designated the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in 1966 but it didn't become an official holiday until 1972 by President Nixon.

I found another website that talked about Father's Day around the world and how it's celebrated.

A lot of places celebrate Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday in June but they do different things. It said that in Japan, Father's Day is celebrated with beer and seafood. In Mexico, they participate in a 21K race and then enjoy a feast. Some places around the world celebrate Father's Day on other days. In Germany, it's celebrated on the 6th Sunday after Easter.

I found another website that had cute drawings explaining Father's Day around the world. It explained how to pronounce Happy Father's Day in the different languages. I practiced saying them all. It was kinda hard.

Goodhousekeeping had another article that had a nice video about Father's Day. It also had a list of ideas on how to celebrate Father's Day. I liked idea #9 the best.
