The United Nations established the International Day of Peace in 1981 and is observed around the world on September 21. On the International Day of Peace website, it says, "Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace." The hope of Peace Day is that for at least one day, everyone around the world can experience 24 hours without violence.

It said that this year's theme is Shaping Peace Together. They encourage people to spread "compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stand together with the UN against attempts to use the virus to promote discrimination or hatred."

I really liked this sentence. "Even though we may not be able to stand next to each other, we can still dream together." I liked the idea that even though we all have to social distance because of COVID-19, we can all still put our thoughts together to try and make the world better.

I found that there was a Peace Day observance here in Hawaii from the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii website. It was a virtual program and they invited people to ring a bell for peace. Here's a video of the event. It's pretty cool. At about 20 minutes into the video, they show people from all over Hawaii (as well as some places on the mainland) ringing their bells.
