I love red pandas. My first softball team was named the Manoa Red Pandas. I had a lot of fun being on that team.

I also think they're really cute so I was happy to learn that there's an International Red Panda Day. I found this really cool website called the Red Panda Network that has a lot of information about red pandas.

Some cool facts I learned from this website:

  • Red pandas are not related to pandas and were actually discovered nearly fifty years before the giant panda. This is why they are sometimes called "the first panda."

  • There may only be 2,500 red pandas living in the wild so they are considered endangered. Some of the reasons why they are endangered is because people are cutting down the trees of their habitat and there are others who hunt them illegally.

  • In the wild, they can be found in the mountain forests of Myanmar, Nepal, India, China and Bhutan.

  • Their color helps them camouflage. The red matched the moss on the trees where they live and the black on their stomach makes it hard for people to see them from below.

  • They use their fluffy tail as a blanket and pillow.
