Learning about dragons through Pokemon

Today I started another Outschool class. It's called Pokémon, Mythology, and Culture: Dragons.

It's not a live class. It has videos that I can watch at any time and a discussion board where I post reactions to the video. We're gong to be learning about European dragons, Asian dragons and American dragons.

This week's video was about European dragons. European dragons usually

have wings and horns and breath fire. They are also destructive and aggressive. They are usually evil. Today she talked about four dragons. The first was Hydra. I knew Hydra from movies like Godzilla. She thought that the Pokemon Zweilous was probably based on Hydra. I learned that Hercules fought Hydra and to prevent Hydra from growing more heads you have to burn the stump.

The next one was Zmey and Lamya. They're Bulgarian dragons. I had never heard of this dragon. Zmey are male dragons and Lamya are the female dragons. The female is actually the more aggressive one. She said the Pokemon called Hydreigon is similar to the Zmey and Lamya.

The Medieval dragon is the one we usually see in movies. They're usually really destructive and breath fire. The Pokemon Charizard and Salamence are similar to Medieval dragons. Charizard is know for breathing fire. This is a drawing I made of Charizard.

The last one for today was the Wyvern. I knew about Wyvern from a dragon book I have. It's a dragon that walks on two legs, not four legs like other dragons. It doesn't breath fire. I didn't know that it comes from Italian mythology. My teacher said the most famous Wyvern is in the story about St. George the dragon slayer. She mentioned a few Pokemon that might be based on the Wyvern but I think the Kyurem looks most like it.
