May 1st in Hawaii usually has a lot of events. Some schools have May Day festivals. There are lei contests and music concerts. But because of COVID-19 this year, a lot of things got cancelled. We looked online to see how people were still celebrating Lei Day today.
We found that the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation asked that people celebrate Lei Day by making a lei and hanging it on their mailbox as a way to honor first responders. People posted pictures of their mailboxes with leis on Instagram. The theme was call Na Lei Koa. (Warrior Lei Day). Here are some of my favorites.

The Honolulu Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts posted a bunch of videos on how to make different kinds of leis. When we can get a bunch of flowers, I'm going to try some of these. I really like this ti leaf one.
Hawaii News Now had a nice collection of pictures showing how people still celebrated Lei Day today. I loved this doggie picture.

We also found an article that said the Department of Education put together a video with May Day performances from students at home.
It looks like even though regular events were cancelled people still found a way to celebrate Lei Day.
