National Go Fishing Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

When we weren't in quarantine we used to go fishing in Kaaawa near my great grandma’s house. When my dad and I went out fishing he would usually cast the line and when he felt something tugging I’d reel the fish in.

Since it's a work day and we're still not going out much, we're celebrating National Go Fishing Day by fishing on our Nintendo Switch game Animal Crossing.

When you want to catch fish you will see a shadow in the water. That shadow is a fish. Sometimes you may catch rubbish like tires, boots, and a tin can. Some fish only come out at certain times like in the afternoon or in the morning. The coelacanths only come out when it's raining. Whenever it’s raining my brother always says, "coelacanth time!" But even in real life now, whenever it’s raining, he says, "coelacanth time!"

Some fish also only come out in certain months. Some other big fish you may catch are the oarfish, sea bass, red snapper, and four different kinds of sharks.

After we catch some fish we usually sell them to the two little racoons. My dad likes to catch lots of big and expensive fish in the game so he can sell it to the two little raccoons. Sometimes even this badger dude comes to our island to buy fish and he pays more than the raccoons. When my dad was catching lots of good fish, the badger dude was here on the island and my dad sold all the fish to him and got 80,000 bells. Bells are the same thing as dollars in Animal Crossing.

We also donate fish to the island's museum. Here are some pictures of "me" in the museum with some of the fish we caught.

I really like catching fish in this game because it’s less complicated compared to fishing in real life. I also don't have to worry about taking the fish off the hook. Yuck! Once things get back to normal, I hope I can catch real fish with my dad. I also hope I can catch some big fish. I don't think we can catch any coelacanths. My dad says they are really rare, deep water fish that don't live near Hawaii. We have caught some papio that would have been big enough for us to keep. But we throw most of them back. My dad says we should always throw back fish that are too small and we shouldn't take what we don't need.
