National Ice Cream Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan named the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day.

According to NationalToday.com, some people say that a food that was like ice cream was first eaten in China around 618-97 AD. It also said a ruler named Alexander the Great ate ice and snow covered with nectar and honey. (But that sound more like shave ice to me.)

It said that the explorer Marco Polo brought back to Italy a recipe for something that we would recognized as sherbet from the Far East.

This CNN article said that Thomas Jefferson wrote down an 18-step recipe for ice cream and that was the first known recipe for ice cream in the United States.

The United States doesn't eat the most ice cream in the world. According to NationalToday.com, New Zealand actually comes in first.

The Food Network website has a nice article about types of ice cream around the world. They said that Japan has mochi ice cream, but it actually started in the United States. Germany has spaghettieis which has the ice cream look like spaghetti. Ecuador's helado de paila reminded me of the Dole whip I got at the Dole plantation. But I think the one that I was most interested in was the viennetta from the United Kingdom. It's an ice cream cake with layers of vanilla ice cream and chocolate.
