National Loving Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

When I saw that today was National Loving Day, I thought, "Eeeww, mushy stuff."

But I read a webpage and found out "Loving" is the last name of a couple who was part of a Supreme Court case. In 1958 Richard and Mildred Loving got married. They were arrested because it was illegal for people who were different races to get married. They fought against the law and on June 12, 1967 the Supreme Court said that the laws that said they couldn't get married were wrong.

The webpage also said that Loving Day was started by a man named Ken Tanabe in 2004 who had a Japanese father and a Belgian mother to celebrate multiethnic families.

Today is also Superman Day. Superman's ok. But my family's more Batman fans.

I have a bunch of Batgirl dolls and action figures. These are just a couple of my Bat-family plushies. I dressed up as Batgirl for Halloween for two years. For one of our drive-in movie nights at school, my mom made me a cardboard Batmobile and a side car for my little brother who dressed up as Robin.

Here's a Batman drawing I did for Superman Day. :P
