National Milk Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

I don't really like to drink milk. I'm ok with chocolate milk but regular milk... not so much. When we're in school I drink milk every other day and chocolate milk on the others because my parents said I should really drink white milk. My dad will ask me every once in a while to check, "Did you drink white milk or chocolate milk today?"

I do like ice cream. But I know that's not the same.

For National Milk Day I found a virtual tour of a dairy farm.

Some things I learned.

  • There are over 40,000 dairy farms across America.

  • There are 6 types of dairy cows: Holstein, Guernsey, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Milking Shorthorns and Ayrshire.

  • Cows live in different types of houses.

  • Cows don't just eat hay.

  • A cow's stomach has four parts to break up food.

  • Cows that are comfortable produce more milk

  • They use technology to track every cow. It tracks how much milk they produced and when they were milked.

  • Cows don't sweat.

  • Dairy farms try to recycle as much as possible.

Paige, I share many of your dairy opinions:

  1. I don't like milk either :(

  2. Chocolate milk is okay :)

  3. Ice cream is more than okay :) :) :)

  4. Cows are awesome!
