National Paste Up Day

I had no idea was this was.

I read on the National Day Calendar website that before computers, newspapers and magazines used to format the pages by cutting and pasting things together. For me, that actually sounded like fun. But we watched a video of a magazine showing how it was done and I changed my mind. It looked way too difficult. If you wanted to change a word or sentence, you had to carefully cut it out and try and glue things back in that space. (That's where we get the phrase "cut and paste" when we're working on our documents on the computer.)

Computers have made editing a lot easier! But my mom told me that sometimes older ways of doing things are good too. She told me that when she worked in a newsroom the older reporters who learned to write their stories on typewriters were able to finish their stories faster. It was because they were used to having the stories already planned out in their head before they started typing. With a typewriter you have to write your story from start to finish in order. Making changes would take a lot of time to fix.

To celebrate National Paste Up Day, we tried to find virtual tours of newsrooms. It was really hard to find. We found this video of a college newsroom that was kinda interesting.

We did find a virtual tour of a BBC Newsroom that was cool.
