National School Backpack Awareness Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

The American Occupational Therapy Association created National School Backpack Awareness Day to "help others Live Life To Its Fullest by avoiding the pain and injury that can come from heavy backpacks and bags."

The website has a lot of good information about how to find the right backpack. I didn't realize there were so many things you had to look for. I usually just look for a bag to look nice and can hold a lot of stuff.

They even have a handout that gives tips about how to pack a bag and how to wear it. Some of the things it mentions:

  • a backpack should not weigh more than 10% of of the wearer's body weight. (Oh boy! I've been carrying way more than that.)

  • you should pack the heavier items towards the back of the bag. I usually just try and make things fit as quickly as possible.

  • you should use both straps to distribute the weight evenly

  • if a bag has a waist belt, you should use it.

The website even has a handout for Tips on Creating a Virtual Learning Space.
