There is some confusion if today is really National Video Game Day. According to this GameRant.com article a 1991 calendar first lists July 8 as National Video Game Day. In 1997, it was moved to September 12. Nobody knows why. But some people celebrate it on both days.

According to the article, National Video Game Day is "a day for kids of all ages who enjoy playing video games to celebrate the fun they have while playing them." The article also says why National Video Game Day is important. It says that while we're all social distancing, online multiplayer games have been a way for people to interact with each other. I know this is definitely true for me. It's the only way I've been keeping touch with my friends. I have daily Roblox meetings with a group of friends.
This New York Post article says 2000 people were surveyed on their thoughts about video games. Fifty-six percent believed esports should be part of the Olympics. Another interesting statistic was that more than half of the people thought esports will eventually become more popular than contact sports. I personally don't think so.

The survey also asked what skills people thought video games helped to improve. The top skill was concentration, followed by hand-eye coordination and problem solving.
