National Wildlife Refuge Week

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Wildlife Refuge Week is observed the second full week of October every year and it "celebrates the great network of lands and waters that conserves and protects Americans’ precious wildlife heritage."

The website says wildlife refuges help protect native animals like American alligators and buffalo, provide recreation areas for fishing, hunting and hiking and helps to prevent flooding risk and wildfire damage.

I wish I had found out about this sooner. The website lists a whole bunch of activities that happened this week that sounded fun. Different wildlife refuges had nature sketching activities and scavenger hunts.

I found an article that said a wildlife refuge on Kauai was celebrating National Wildlife Refuge Week. Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge just installed a new fence that supposed to keep animals like cats, dogs, mongoose and rats out to protect Hawaiian petrels and Newell’s shearwaters. They're opening the refuge up to a limited number of visitors tomorrow.
