"It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build." - Nelson Mandela

Every year on July 18, the United Nations asks that you celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day by making a difference in your communities and inspire change.

Who was Nelson Mandela?

According to National Geographic Kids, Nelson Mandela is best know for becoming the first black president of South Africa and a civil rights hero. When Nelson Mandela was growing up, there was a huge difference in how black and white people in South Africa were treated. White people had more rights than black people. There was a government system called apartheid that made things unequal between white and black people. Nelson Mandela didn't think that was fair. He worked against those laws and was sent to prison.

Here's a short video about Nelson Mandela.
