No distance learning, I don't have a choice anymore

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

So after the WebEx meeting with Manoa School that my mom listened to, the school emailed parents a survey asking who would be interested in distance learning. We thought that by filling it out, they would send us more information. In the meeting, my mom said they would be using something called Acellus Learning.

My mom got a message from Manoa School today and found out we had to tell them yes or no if we were going to do distance learning and they needed an answer in a few hours. They didn't send any more information about how this would work. My mom had meetings all day for work and couldn't call back until the afternoon.

When she did call she found out that if we did distance learning, I'd be cut off from Manoa School completely. We knew that the school work would be created by the company but we thought there would still be someone from Manoa School checking in.

It was kinda weird too. They wouldn't send us the application form to look at. They said once they send us the form we would be locked into doing distance learning. I had my mom ask how many 5th graders were going to do distance learning and they said none. That made me sad. It kinda makes me feel like no one else is worried. Or maybe I'm the one that's crazy to be worried. I don't know.

My mom told them she'd call them back. After talking to my dad who was still at work, we decided not to do distance learning. We wanted to do distance learning for just a semester or at least hybrid, to see how bad COVID-19 was with everything opening back up. Kinda just ease back into things. But if I'm cut off from the school until December and have to jump back in with everyone else in January, my parents felt I would be completely lost. We're crossing our fingers that they'll at least push the start date back a bit more. But I don't think Manoa School is even considering any distance learning.

My mom called them back to let them know. She said they made it sound like they were doing us a favor by going completely face to face. She was a little mad about that. Sigh...

I miss you too, Paigey Paige! Just a thought— since you are clearly understanding the power of your written voice, would you consider writing to Mr. Kusuda to tell him how you feel? I’d be happy to help you with a letter. Just a thought!

Paige, you’re so brave and so honest. You have no reason to feel ashamed of how you feel. You’re not alone. I’m worried too, and us worried folks need to stand together! In a pandemic, we can only do our best and support one another. I’m here for you!

Thanks Ms. Carr. I'll keep crossing my fingers. I'm hoping I don't get teased by classmates (or even some teachers) for being worried. I'll try to stay positive and keep hoping face to face, all day, everyday is going to be ok. Sigh...
