Robots and origami!

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

I happened to see a bunch of articles today about robots and origami. I didn't understand it all but combining the two sounds really cool to me!

The first article I found was about research at the University of Michigan. Their work is with microbots and using origami techniques to have the microbots change shape. The articles says, "Their bots can form one shape, complete a task, then reconfigure into a second shape for an additional task, and so on." Sounds like mini Transformers to me. Pretty cool.

The second article was about research by The Ohio State University and Georgia Institute of Technology. This article talked about using origami techniques "for modern engineering applications such as untethered robotics and morphing devices." Not exactly sure what that means. It also talked about a "cylindrical origami pattern that consists of identical triangular panels known as a Kresling pattern. This pattern allows the cylinder’s walls to buckle under axial or torsional load." The Kresling pattern kinda looks like the DNA origami I've made in the past. It sounds like this pattern can help structures change shape quickly. Cool!
