Robots that give people jobs

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

My mom showed me this really interesting video. At first it was a little creepy because it was a restaurant where all of the waiters were robots.

Even the person in the video thought it was weird and thought, "oh the Japanese just really love their robots." I thought this would be another example of how robots would be taking jobs from people. But the video went on to explain that there was a person controlling those robots. And these people were at home. The one person who was interviewed was a man named Massa who is handicapped and cannot leave his home. He lies in his bed and controls the robot with his eyes and he can talk to customer through a microphone.

Massa said that this technology gives him hope for the future. He enjoys the ability to bring joy to his customers.

We found some articles that talked a little more about the restaurant. The restaurant is based on one that was seen in an anime series named “Time of Eve.” It's a story about humans and robots that live together peacefully.

Another article said it was a 2-week experiment in 2018. Ten people with severe handicaps worked for the restaurant and were paid about $9 an hour. The creators were hoping to raise enough funds to make it more permanent in 2020. We weren't able to find an update. I hope they're able to make this work. It seems like a really great thing to give these disabled people an opportunity to interact with other people this way.
