SpaceX Splashdown

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

The two astronauts who went up in the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft returned home today. It happened around 9am Hawaii time. I wasn't up yet to watch it but I watched some of it later on the internet.

The spacecraft landed in the Gulf of Mexico. They called that a splashdown. They said the last time NASA astronauts returned from space and landed in the water was in 1975.

NASA was a little worried since there was a tropical storm near the area but the weather ended up being calm. After the spacecraft landed, they had something else to worry about. A bunch of private boats tried to get close. The coast guard had tried to keep them away but lot of them got close.

Once they moved the boats away, they moved the spacecraft onto a big boat. They then got the astronauts out. It took them a while to do that because they wanted to make sure everything was safe.

The astronauts were in space for 2 months. That's my whole summer break. Their liftoff was a couple days after our last day of school.
