Still waiting for the storm

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

It feels weird waiting for a hurricane and seeing sunny skies outside.

The news says that Oahu is under a hurricane warning which means it could bring "damaging winds, flooding rains, and large surf." I heard my parents' phones go off earlier today with the hurricane warnings. I asked if the hurricane was starting. They told me it's not like a school bell. :) The alarms are to let us know that there is a warning so that we can prepare.

The hurricane has died down a bit so it's now a category 1 storm but it can still be dangerous. This news article says that Oahu will probably see the strongest winds Sunday afternoon or Monday morning. It says the winds could be destructive and we could see flash floods because of rain.

This article said that hurricanes in Hawaii are generally rare. It says that the cooler waters near the islands usually weaken the hurricanes. But there have been several hurricanes that have caused a lot of damage in Hawaii.

Hurricane Lane 2018 didn't hit the islands but still caused a lot of damage. It hit Oahu and Kauai as a tropical depression but still caused a lot of flooding.

Hurricane Iniki hit in 1992. This is considered the most powerful hurricane in Hawaii's history. This was a category 4 hurricane that destroyed 1,421 homes and killed 6 people. Jurassic Park was filming on Kauai when the hurricane hit. The article says that the movie uses some film of the hurricane.

Hurricane Iwa in 1982 is considered the most damaging. There were 2,345 buildings and 1,927 homes that were destroyed. The entire island of Kauai was left without power. This was only a category 1 hurricane.

Crossing my fingers we just get a little bit of rain.
