I was trying to find something to write about today so I searched "today in history." When I was scrolling down, I saw this: 1985: Highest in-flight death toll as 520 die when Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashes into Mount Takamagahara.
My mom had actually told me about this after my Learning Japanese Through Music class on Sunday. My teacher played a song called "Ue o Muite Arukou." After the class, my mom told me it was one of my grandpa's favorite songs and the singer died in one of the worst airplane crashes in history. Instead of writing about this sad day, I'm going to write about the song.

According to JPNInfo.com, it's the most successful Japanese song of all time. The song was a big hit in Japan. In 1963, it became the number one hit in America. It's sold more than 13 million copies, making it one of the best-selling songs of all time.
The song's title means Look up as I walk. But to people outside of Japan, the song was named Sukiyaki because it was easy to say and that was something people thought of when they thought of Japan.
The lyrics talk about someone feeling lonely and looking up so their tears won't fall. Most people think it's a love song. But the writer actually wrote it after a protest against the US military being in Japan in the 1950s failed. It isn't all sad though. The song goes on to say, "A good fortune is beyond the clouds / A good fortune is beyond the sky / So I'm looking up and I'm looking forward, imagining that good fortune in the future."
