Virtual Okinawan Festival

Every year my mom takes us to the Okinawan Festival. We buy festival shirts, we eat food (especially andagi), we buy stuff from the craft vendors, I play some games, we see some of our relatives and my mom always has my brother and me take pictures in Okinawan kimonos. She has a picture of me in a kimono every year since I was two years old. Sadly because of COVID-19 we won't get to do any of that this year. This year, they tried to do a virtual Okinawan Festival.

Their website listed a some stuff for sale like the festival shirts and some face masks. I was hoping to see some of the craft fair vendors but they didn't list any. They also listed a bunch of Okinawan related restaurants and encouraged people to buy food from them before logging on to watch the festival on their computer. My mom decided to buy some bentos from Ige's Halawa. The only thing that was really Okinawan about the bento was the andagi. But I liked it.

The online festival started at 2:00pm. The hosts of the festival were live. A lot of the entertainment was videos from previous years. The videos were of performances and interviews with people. It was kind of interesting but still not the same as the real things.

Later at night they showed an hour of video from various bon dances from previous years. That was also fun but not as good as being there in person.

The festival continues tomorrow. I think my friend Isabella might be in one of the videos.
