Waikiki Aquarium videos

The Waikiki Aquarium has livestream sessions on Mondays at 9:30am. We have class at that time but the aquarium records the livestreams and has them posted on their website.

I watched a couple of episodes. They were really interesting. I learned that the nautilus that the aquarium died a couple months ago. They aren't going to get a new one. The nautilus is on the threatened species list and they aren't able to reproduce in captivity. The aquarium didn't think it was right to get another one.

I also learned that to work at an aquarium you should study biology to learn how to take care of the animals and the environment it lives in. They said it's a lot of responsibility because you're taking care of living things. They also said it doesn't pay a lot but the reward is taking care of such wonderful animals.

In another episode I learned that the biggest fish they have is a giant grouper. The one that they have is 4 feet 4 inches long. It came from Taiwan and is 17-18 years old. Groupers can live at least 70-80 years. The largest they heard of was 8 feet long but they didn't know how much that one weighed. They said there was a 7 feet 4 inches grouper that was 660 pounds.

The video also showed how they make the food for their Hawaiian Monk seal. He eats squid, herring and night smelt.

They cut the food up so they can use it to train the monk seal.
