What's Juneteenth?

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

I watched a couple of videos today explaining what Juneteenth is. I had never heard of it.

The first video I watched was PBS kids.

Juneteenth celebrates the day that Texas learned that slaves were free. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 to end slavery. Because they didn't have things like TV or the internet, the news had to be delivered in person to each state. The news finally got to Texas on June 19, 1865 which was the last place slaves learned that they were free.

People celebrate Juneteenth by going to baseball games, rodeos, fishing and learning more about the day.

I watched another video that said slaves weren't allowed to wear nice clothes. So when people celebrate Juneteenth it's a big thing try to be the best dressed.

This article talked about ways to celebrate Juneteenth with your family. I like the suggestions about listening to music and watching videos. It listed some Nickelodeon shows called "My Brother and Me" and "Gullah Gullah Island" and a Disney show called "The Proud Family." I'm going to try and find them on YouTube.

Happy Juneteenth Day, Paige. What a tremendously important day in US and world history. Some people didn't find out that the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed (or that they were free people!!!) for TWO AND A HALF YEARS. It is so important for us to learn the stories of our history, to teach and share with one another, and to constantly try to make the world a better place than it ever has been, for everyone. Thank you for teaching and sharing the story of Juneteenth Day!
