What's Labor Day?

I know Labor Day as the day after the Okinawan Festival and a day off from school. But I'm sure there's more to it than that.

Found this nice PBS Kids video that had an explanation.

The video said that it's a day to celebrate the balance of work, rest and play in our lives.

About 150 years ago, in the Industrial Revolution, when people started working in factories, mines and railroads, people worked really long hours and sometimes in dangerous conditions. Kids even went to work. People protested for the right to be safe at work, to be allowed to rest and to get paid fairly. The government listened to the people and started making laws to protect them

On June 28, 1894, the government established Labor Day as a national holiday to honor the workers who fought for their rights.
