We got our login into EduHam at Home so for the 4th of July today, we did a little bit of research about the Declaration of Independence.

In the spring of 1776, American colonies were saying they wanted independence from Great Britain. The Continental Congress decided to make a declaration for all thirteen colonies. Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft and then it was edited by other people. Congress voted to separate from Great Britain and passed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The document gives reasons why the colonies should separate from Great Britain. I didn't understand a lot of it. But there was a video of the actor who played Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton and he explained that the document was kind of a break up letter.

He said when he reads the first line of the Declaration of Independence, "When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another," it makes him think of King George in the play. King George sings about how America shouldn't end its relationship with him. This document is the opposite and is telling him all the reasons why the relationship doesn't work. He imagines King George in the play getting this letter and thinking that America gets mad all the time and he sings his song, "You'll be back."
