World Lemur Day

Writer's picture: PaigePaige

According to the Lemur Conservation Network, "A staggering 98% of lemur species are threatened with extinction. And, 31% are categorized as Critically Endangered, the highest threat level." Because of this, they use World Lemur Day to help teach people about lemurs to help save them.

The first World Lemur Day was celebrated in 2014 in Madagascar. Madagascar is the only place lemurs naturally call home.

Here are some other cool facts about lemurs from the Lemur Conservation Network.

  • There are over 100 species of lemur.

  • They are considered "creators of the forest" because they help to spread seeds.

  • Other than humans, lemurs are the only primates that have blue eyes.

  • Lemur have stink fights against their rivals.

Here's a short video of how some people in Madagascar worked together to protect the lemurs.
