We looked up what special day May 3 is and found out it is World Press Freedom Day. According to Wikipedia the purpose of World Press Freedom Day is to remind people of the importance of freedom of the press. According to a kids encyclopedia freedom of the press "is a promise by a government not to punish journalists for doing their job."
We couldn't find a good website for kids that explained World Press Freedom Day. We did find a National Geographic blog that had lesson plan ideas for teachers. We clicked on something called the World Press Freedom Index. My mom explained that the group that made the website ranked countries on how much freedom journalists have in that country. I was surprised the United States was ranked 45.
We went to the United Nations website and learned that this year's celebration also looked at COVID-19. It said that journalists help to stop the spread of fake information about COVID-19 which could be really harmful. The website had a video that gave tips on how we can all help to stop spreading fake information.
